Boutique holidays in Pollensa with a twist of old school charm and modern luxury
For a long time hotels were banned in Pollensa along with discos and late night bars. There was always the old hostel on the square but no one could get a licence to open a new place. It's possibly what has kept the town innocent and separate from its rowdy sister on the coast. While Puerto Pollensa has bars all along the front and clubs set back around the old square and down by the Guardia Civil, Pollensa remained genteel, the most action a pool game at Jam Bar or late night drinking on the square.
While the big hotels kept tourism firmly locked to the costas, the only foreigners to venture inland were those in the know. And they would be staying as guests in a private home somewhere. At some point the law must have changed and hotels began to sprout up all over the place. Small, low key establishments befitting the tranquil nature of the viillage, more bed and breakfast than luxury hotel.
As Pollensa has matured into its rather smart new self, it seems like high time it offered something a little more luxurious, as befits its more discerning clientele.
A trendy cafe and restaurant in Pollensa's new luxury hotel
If you casually saunter into the main foyer of Mon Boutique Hotel and the cafe downstairs, you immediately get a sense of the grandness ofthe place.
The local designer in charge of the refurb has done marvels with what was always a drab and rather dark entrance hall, clever use of mirrors and a hidden reception give you the feeling that this is a trendy cafe, and in many ways it is. Open to the public, this is not a private restaurant. I dined there myself just a few days ago. And I have to say, it was delicious, exquisitely prepared, cooked and served, and the starters blew me away.
There is another way to eat here which is all about large tapas and sharing. But we didn't order any of the dishes on that menu. I will just have to go back and taste them too.
We did share one dessert, a deconstructed creme broullee. It was confusing at first, until we began to eat, and then it made sense: each flavour separate. The word experience is getting banded about a bit too readily at the moment, but I have to say, we spoke about that dessert for days, it really was an amazing experience!

Look skywards from the pavement cafe and you quickly realise this is no ordinary eatery, or hotel for that matter. The curtains are drapped outwards over the verandah with the hotel's insignia engraved. You cannot quite see in, but there is promise.
You don't have to spy of course, you can stay here. And if you are in town and curious, pop in and ask to be shown around. The proprietors are delighted with the result and will be happy to give you a tour.
There are several types of rooms spread out over the 3 storey building, from the standard doubles to the master suite and they are all large and airy, beautifully refurbished with wooden floors, enormous beds, ensuite bathrooms and big windows either looking out over the plaza or nestled into the back. Two of the most luxurious bedrooms are located at the back of the building, in its quietest area, with hot tubs on their private terraces.

Aside from the basic luxuries of a gorgeous hotel room and a high end restaurant and pavement cafe at the foot of the square in an old Medieval village in the north of the island, there are the extras. And this is where it begins to get interesting.
A short conversation with the hotel manager revealed that when it comes to services, they are open to anything, and in fact, gladly welcome the challenge. They can provide all manner of hire services (taxi, motorbike, bicycle,etc), restaurant bookings, beauty and wellness treatments, sport, culture, art, music and adventure activities, special gifts and events. Celebrate a special day or get a unique gift. Or rather make the gift an experience, try wine tasting or visit a local fair.
The reality is that it will be hard to find something they cannot get, but it's worth giving it a go.

The location warrants an entire article, more about this later on... but for the time being, let's just say that the village is set in a valley backed into the northern side of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains, the island's backbone and an emblematic landscape you can explore, walking, hiking, birding, cycling, climbing or fell running. It protected, thankfully, by the UNESCO and riddled with old smuggling routes, now reconditioned and marked as the GR221 cross - Tramuntana dry stone way.
To the north and north east of Pollensa, some 6 km away, you reach the coast. There is Puerto Pollensa, the village port, marina and holiday resort, and there is Cala San Vicente, with its 4 small coves and algae cleaned blue sea, a favourite spot for cliff jumping, snorkelling and kayaking.
... all in all, an absolutely fabulous new spot of luxury accomodation in town!
Given the unique charm of the village of Pollensa and the wealth and variety on offer in this little corner of the island, it's exciting to see a hotel open with such elegance and style!
